What do mechanical engineers do? This is the question which comes to every mind when thinking of mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers come up with creative ideas for solutions to technical problems in many fields. They design, produce and deal with machines of all kinds. Usually mechanical engineers are deployed in three types of fields. First field is that of product design and manufacturing. This field is also referred to as research and development (R&D) sector. Second main area of work for mechanical engineers is that of maintenance, where they keep check of equipment performance, installation and maintenance. Third field is of management, administration or teaching etc.
One might think that what do mechanical engineers do in different industries and companies? Actually mechanical engineering is such a diverse and versatile field in itself that mechanical engineers are found to work in almost all the companies and industries. Not only they can work in all industries but they are also capable of starting their own entrepreneurial businesses after graduation. They create machines, products and new technologies to make our lives more comfortable.
Mechanical engineers are creative and they come up with solutions to the problems by using their knowledge of principles of force, energy and motion, they analyze the design of a product to check for factors such as reliability, efficiency and also product safety. More than half of the mechanical engineers are employed in field of manufacturing where their duty is to manufacture different machinery, machine parts, automotive parts, transportation equipment, electronic products and many other metal products.
Mechanical engineers usually work in these fields and sectors of mechanical engineering:
  • Air pollution control
  • Energy production
  • Environmental systems
  • Petroleum
  • Aerospace engineering
  • Plastics
  • Product design and manufacturing
  • Automotive engineering
  • Managerial and government sector
  • Energy systems and power control
  • Refrigeration and heating systems
  • Piping
  • Structural engineering
  • Textile industry
I hope this gives everyone an idea and understanding of “what do mechanical engineers do?
